MOURNING ROOM II - (lament, lament) provides a private space in a public sphere to give room to sorrows of all kinds. The installation centers around a karaoke box offering songs and props to slip into, for users to test shared protocols of mourning and rehearse their own. They may sing, scream, cry, dance, listen, lament, lip sync, be silent - whatever the path for grief in its many forms to find relief.
The Installation can only be entered by one or max. two individuals at a time.
The work was inspired by the time I was a resident in Japan, where I spend many evenings in Karaoke Rooms for single-use only, finding solace in the cathartic energy released by singing, in solitude, with no one watching. Slipping into the words and movements of an other to access my own emotions.
